Quality Standards in Child Care for Iowa

Iowa child care providers are not required to have their programs rated. However, Iowa does have an optional rating system known as the Iowa Quality Rating System (QRS). Providers who choose to participate in the QRS program are rated on a scale of one to five stars, with five stars being the best.

The QRS program started rating child care programs in 2006. As of early 2008, over 240 centers and more than 540 child care homes have already chosen to have their programs rated. With more programs expected to participate, this rating system is an excellent way for you to get an idea of the quality of care you may expect with a specific provider. However, remember that it is always your responsibility to thoroughly investigate and continue to monitor any provider you choose. No rating system can ever guarantee a certain level of care will always be maintained.
